Beat Rupp 71c0564702 Point the package and README at the Skiff repository
The spec's URL now names git.rupp.digital/brupp/skiff instead of Servo.
The README says where to get Skiff (OpenRepos, release downloads) and
links the source, and DEVELOPMENT.md describes publishing, correcting the
note that ruled out the Jolla Store.

Skiff

A simple web browser for Sailfish OS, built on Servo, the web engine written in Rust.

Skiff showing servo.org

Skiff shows one page at a time with a Silica interface: back and forward, an address bar, reload, and a menu. It is a small, independent alternative to the Gecko-based Sailfish Browser, and a way to try Servo on a phone.

Features

  • Pages laid out for mobile, with touch scrolling and tapping
  • Typing with the Sailfish keyboard, including word suggestions
  • Native pickers for drop-down lists, and native dialogs for alert(), confirm() and prompt() (labelled with the site that asks)
  • Links that open a new window open in the current one
  • Cookies and site data are kept between sessions
  • Pages are paused while the app is in the background or the screen is locked
  • Runs sandboxed (Sailjail) with only the Internet permission

Limitations

Servo is still young and Skiff is a first version (0.1):

  • Many sites work, but some render incompletely or not at all. Some icons show as black squares.
  • One page at a time: no tabs, and pages that talk to a window they opened (some login popups) don't work.
  • The address bar takes addresses only; there is no search yet.
  • No downloads, pinch-zoom, file uploads or color pickers.
  • Pressing Enter submits a form only if it has an <input type=submit> button.
  • 64-bit ARM (aarch64) phones only.

Installing

Skiff needs Sailfish OS 5.1 or later on a 64-bit ARM phone. It is tested on Sailfish OS 5.2.

Skiff is available from OpenRepos (search for Skiff, or install it with Storeman, which also keeps it updated). Each version's RPM is also attached to the releases.

To install a downloaded harbour-skiff-<version>.aarch64.rpm, open it on the phone. You may have to allow untrusted software first, under Settings › Untrusted software. With developer mode enabled, you can also install it from a terminal:

devel-su pkcon install-local harbour-skiff-0.1.0-1.aarch64.rpm

The app needs about 110 MB of space, mostly for the Servo engine.

Your data

Cookies, local storage and other site data are kept in ~/.local/share/org.skiff/skiff; deleting that folder signs you out everywhere. Skiff sends no data of its own anywhere. Websites see the browser as Mozilla/5.0 (Sailfish OS; Mobile; rv:153.0) Servo/0.7.0 Firefox/153.0.

Building

See docs/DEVELOPMENT.md for cross-compiling Servo for Sailfish OS, building the app with the Sailfish SDK, and how it works inside.
